Design & Prototyping

Design and Prototypes from DMI 3D

From idea conception to final product, it is good to have an expert companion helping with all the steps in between. We walk with you through the whole design process, especially during the loop-the-loop of prototype testing and refinement. Utilizing our 3D modeling and 3D printing services helps you develop and refine your design idea with a tangible prototype to test your concept.

The unique combination of 3D modeling and 3D printing can shorten product development time, reduce costs, and ultimately improve the quality of your design.

Shorten product development time

Initial development work can be done with a digital solid model. Though a solid model at first appears to be just a picture of a physical object, it actually has properties like weight, volume, and density so it can be analyzed for different materials or sliced to see inside. Solid models are great tools for initial prototyping of engineering designs because they allow you to see the part exactly as designed without producing a physical piece. Then the model can be easily modified until you’re completely satisfied. When you’re ready, we can go straight to making the physical part from the digital model.

Quick turnaround for physical prototypes

Once a design has been refined as a digital model, our 3D printing capabilities can quickly provide you with a tangible part for testing. Parts that fit within the build volume of our printers can be printed full size. Larger parts can be easily scaled down and printed as scale models you can manipulate.

Not quite right? It’s easy to update the design in the digital space and print a new prototype.

Digitally analyze mechanical systems and components

Seeing your parts in a lifelike view gives you a very clear idea of the appearance and function of your design. Solid modeling with SolidWorks™ allows the designer to change view angles, measure features, and slice the model to enhance your design work. Multiple parts that need to be interconnected can be digitally interfaced to analyze for fit and interference. With solid modeling to simulate your design you can efficiently make adjustments before you take a design print to a fabricator.
